Privacy Policy

1. The short version

Quokka is independently operated by Seth Sharp in Adelaide, South Australia. We collect the minimum data needed to run the service. We don't sell your data, we don't run ads, and we don't share your information with third parties for marketing purposes. Ever.

2. What we collect

Account information

When you register, we collect your name and email address. This is used to authenticate you and communicate important account-related updates.

Preferences and saved data

Your suburb comparison preferences (budget range, priority weightings, preferred state) and tracked properties are stored to provide the service. This data is tied to your account and is not shared with anyone.

Payment information

If you purchase a paid plan, payment is processed by Stripe. We do not store your credit card number, expiry, or CVC. We retain only the information Stripe provides to manage your subscription (e.g., last four digits, card brand, billing status).

Technical data

Like most web applications, our servers log standard request information: IP address, browser type, pages visited, and timestamps. This is used for security, debugging, and understanding aggregate usage patterns.

3. How we use your data

  • To provide and improve the Quokka service
  • To authenticate your account and maintain session security
  • To process payments via Stripe
  • To send essential account communications (e.g., password resets, billing receipts)
  • To diagnose technical issues and prevent abuse

We do not use your data for behavioural advertising, profiling, or sale to third parties.

4. Third-party services

We use a small number of third-party services to operate Quokka:

  • Stripe - payment processing
  • Hosting provider - application and database hosting
  • Email provider - transactional emails (password resets, receipts)

Each of these providers processes data only as necessary to deliver their service to us. We do not use analytics tracking, advertising pixels, or social media integrations.

5. Cookies

Quokka uses essential cookies only: a session cookie to keep you logged in and a CSRF token for security. We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or third-party analytics cookies.

6. Data retention

Your account data is retained for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your personal data, preferences, and tracked properties will be permanently removed within 30 days. Server logs are retained for up to 90 days for security and debugging purposes.

7. Data security

We take reasonable measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), hashed passwords (bcrypt), and secure session management. No system is perfectly secure, but we treat your data with the care we'd expect for our own.

8. Your rights

Under the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and applicable state laws, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate information
  • Request deletion of your account and associated data
  • Complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) if you believe your privacy has been breached

9. Children

Quokka is not intended for use by children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will remove it promptly.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via the email address on your account. The "last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent revision.
