Hi, my name is Seth, the creator of Quokka. This is the start of an authentic blog covering, well, anything I want in relation to Quokka and the Australian property space of course.
I originally built Quokka as a way to see more information about suburbs in Adelaide. As someone new to the city, I found myself looking at different suburbs and trying to piece together information from a bunch of different places.
There is a lot of useful information about Australian suburbs out there. The problem is that it can be spread across government websites, council websites, different datasets and other sources, making it difficult to find, understand and compare in one place.
What started as a small side project to solve that problem for myself slowly turned into something that I thought could be useful for other people too.
So, what is Quokka?
Quokka brings suburb information together in one place, making it easier to explore, understand and compare Australian suburbs.
Whether you're looking to buy your first home, rent, move to a new area, or are simply curious about a suburb, the goal is to make the information easier to find and easier to use.
Right now, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria have a lot of rich information available publicly. The challenge isn't necessarily that the data doesn't exist, but that it can be hard to find and extract into something that's actually readable and useful.
This is where I think Quokka can be highly beneficial.
It's still early days, though. A lot of the information currently available through Quokka comes from free and publicly available sources. Other states have useful datasets too, but some require paid access or licences, which I can't exactly afford right now as a small side project.
That's something I expect to change over time. Quokka is something that will evolve, not only with more data, but with more features and better ways of helping people actually make sense of that information.
This blog will be part of that journey. I'll share updates about Quokka, interesting suburb data, things I learn while building it, and probably the occasional tangent along the way.
